Statement: The Council of Presidents of Medical Colleges (CPMC) is pleased to formally endorse the Australian Standards for Health Practitioner Pain Management Education.
The standards were presented to the CPMC Council, where members acknowledged the importance of strengthening pain management education across the health professions to support consistent, evidence-based and patient-centred care.
Council recognised that chronic pain is encountered across many areas of specialist practice and that the standards provide a valuable, high-level framework to guide educational development across the health system.
Members also noted the importance of implementation through collaboration, recognising that the principles of the standards will need to be translated into education, training and professional development across the relevant disciplines.
CPMC supports the intent of the standards and their role in promoting a consistent approach to pain management education. We also recognise the opportunity for ongoing collaboration across the specialist medical colleges as implementation progresses.
We congratulate ANZCA on its leadership in developing this important national framework and look forward to continuing to work together to improve pain management education and, ultimately, patient care.
