Australia’s specialist medical colleges share a common purpose: to uphold the highest standards of care for patients while fostering a profession in which every specialist, trainee and healthcare team member can thrive.
As medicine evolves, so too must the culture, leadership and professional expectations that underpin safe, high-quality healthcare. Across every specialty, there is growing recognition that professionalism is not simply about meeting standards or responding to misconduct. It is about creating environments where respect, trust, accountability, learning and excellence are actively cultivated every day.
To advance this vision, the Council of Presidents of Medical Colleges (CPMC) brought together Australia’s 16 specialist medical colleges alongside regulators, health sector leaders, safety and quality experts, First Nations representatives and doctors in training to establish a coordinated, profession-led approach to strengthening professionalism, workplace culture and clinical governance across the specialist medical profession.
Together, participants endeavoured to explore and shape The Standard That Unites Us — a shared framework that articulates the values, behaviours and cultural foundations that define modern specialist medical practice in Australia.
The workshop sought to move beyond a compliance-focused view of professionalism towards a culture of stewardship: one in which specialists collectively take responsibility for creating workplaces that are safe, respectful, inclusive and committed to continuous improvement.
The ambition of this workshop was not merely to define expectations, but to inspire a profession-wide commitment to the cultures we wish to create, the behaviours we choose to model, and the legacy we leave for future generations of specialists and trainees.
Facilitators challenged attendees to explore four fundamental questions:
- Where does the current system struggle to effectively support positive professional culture and professionalism?
- What are the biggest barriers to improving culture and professionalism across specialist training and practice environments?
- Where could a cross-college professionalism framework make the greatest difference?
- What would success look like and how could colleges and organisations contribute to achieving it?
Through collaboration and shared leadership, participants worked towards defining the principles, expectations and foundations of a framework that would:
- articulate a common set of professional values, behaviours and expectations across the specialist medical profession
- strengthen safe, respectful and psychologically safe workplace cultures
- support patient-centred care and reinforces public trust in the profession
- promote leadership, reflective practice, accountability and lifelong learning
- recognise the critical relationship between culture, professionalism and patient safety
- support workforce wellbeing, sustainability and the development of future specialist leaders
- encourage prevention, learning and continuous improvement across healthcare systems.
Importantly, this framework is intended to complement—not replace—existing college and other stakeholder standards, accreditation requirements, codes and regulatory processes. Its purpose is to provide a unifying vision that connects the profession around shared aspirations and collective responsibility.
By working together across specialties and organisations, Australia’s specialist medical colleges have committed to establishing a lasting foundation for excellence in professionalism and culture—one that strengthens patient safety, supports the workforce and helps ensure the delivery of exceptional healthcare for all Australians.
Once a singular framework is established, this profession-wide coming together with such a harmonised voice will pave the way for partnerships with healthcare providers to embed into their workplaces.
